Now that HP has released the source code for webOS Community Edition, developers are starting to modify the operating system to meet their needs. One of the first hacks actually comes from Dave Freeman, a developer at HP Palm.

He’s managed to change the way you switch between currently running apps. You can still swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up “cards,” or thumbnail previews of running apps which you can switch between by scrolling. But in Freeman’s software you don’t have to switch to card view at all.

Instead you can just swipe from the side of the screen to switch to the next app.

Freeman modified the LunaSysMgr binary to achieve this effect. His software isn’t available to the public yet, but it’s a first demonstration of the type of thing we can expect to see from developers now that there’s basically an open source version of webOS available for anyone to tweak.
