To my horror my ext hard drive has been replaced with a RAW file system.
Any attempt to access the drive brings an error message about not being able to access the drive due to an unknown file system.

Considered opinion says run EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard.
I got a free copy here:
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html

Its been running now all day and all of the night - 23hrs without a Kink [pun intended] - and still 110 hrs to go, plus it says it is still finding files. This is a backup drive, BUT does contain some unique archive files.

Any advice?

Running Win7x64 with a WD T2 ext hard drive.
Thanks,

anykey give this a try it has returned good results in the past,

Mount the drive as a slave inside the computer and see if you can repair the partition table:

Download the Windows version of TestDisk.

Unzip the downloaded file to your C: drive and open C:\testdisk-6.8\win > double click " testdisk_win" (the program doesn't have to installed).

 A. At the first window select “No Log” and press the <Enter> key.

 B. Select what drive to analyse, choose “Proceed” and <Enter>.

 C. Select partition type – Intel if it’s a PC.

 D. Select “Analyse” then <Enter>. The drive/partition will be analysed.

 E. Select “Proceed” at the next screen, then <Enter>.

 F. Press “Y” if the partitions were created under Vista – “N” if not.

 G. TestDisk should say “Structure OK”. Choose the drive/partition to fix. Then press <Enter>.

 H. Select “Write” and press <Enter>.

 I. Press “Y”.

 J. Press <Enter> and close TestDisk. Reboot the computer.

Since you already have Easeus have a look at their page

Thanks. I've got to be patient. Easeus has still got 72 hrs to run...Ho Hum.

And then I start stage 5.
5. After intelligent search is completed, you will see one or more partitions; choose the highest suggestion partition (or the one which matches your partition in size and type) to recover files from and click "NEXT" to recover.

Cannot wait for that "NEXT" button...
