Next Thursday (July 26), security researchers Mickey Shkatov and Toby Kohlenberg are scheduled to deliver a presentation at Black Hat USA 2012 hacker conference. There they will highlight weaknesses with a technology embedded into every Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation — the Sidebar and Gadgets platform. You need to act before they do this. Gadgets are small snippets of HTML code that run on the Windows desktop. They were born in a different era, one where the malware and threat landscapes was very different. But as Windows has hardened over the years, hackers have been busy looking for new, cleverer weaknesses. According to Shkatov and Kohlenberg, the Sidebar and Gadgets platform is rife with weaknesses.
