Windows Mobile Device Center PDF Print E-mail

While all of us who are locked in to WinMo by our employers choose WinMo Devices over the next iPhone, the G2, or the upcoming Pre, wait for the messianic arrival of WinMo 6.5 while hanging out in limbo, news and new software can be a little slow coming. Here’s something you may have missed. If you’re still using the ActiveSync software that’s been around forever or may have come with your phone, and if you’re running Vista or the Windows 7 Beta, try the Live Mobile Device Center that replaces it. Unfortunately it won’t work on XP, and for some reason there wasn’t a real campaign when this software was launched, but you can download it for free on the Windows Mobile site. It’s a much nicer interface than the tired old ActiveSync, and makes several functions much more intuitive. When you connect your device, this is the main interface screen you will see. Notice the green check mark indicating that my Treo has connected and synchronized...Read more at our Forum

Windows 7: Tweak your logon screen background PDF Print E-mail

For those of you who customize and tweak your operating system to the max, but felt uncomfortable playing around in the registry, but want your installation of Windows 7 to be completely yours, here is your opportunity to make it totally yours.  Neowin earlier sighted that Windows 7 users can now change their logon screen background. But in order to customize the logon screen, users had to hack the registry and create a new directory for background images. This feature looks like it is probably designed for OEMs where they can put their own logon screen background.  Windows 7 Starter and Windows 7 Home Basic editions do have the options to change the logon screen background but nothing more than choosing Windows default or OEM background.  ...Read more at our Forum

Installing Win 7 RC? Roll back to Vista first PDF Print E-mail

Microsoft has posted an update on its Engineering Windows 7 blog outlining the latest news from the team behind the OS as it moves swiftly towards release. Signed simply 'Windows 7 team,' the post appeals to everybody using Windows 7 Beta to help test the Release Candidate (RC) too. But Microsoft wants Beta testers to do this by installing from Vista rather than an earlier build of Windows 7. Why? Because it wants to test the upgrade process from Vista specifically – how upgrades will be performed in what it calls "the real world." "You're anxious for a refresh. You've installed all your applications. You've configured and customized the system. You would love to get the RC and quickly upgrade to it from Beta," says the blog post, softening the way for the news. "The RC, however, is about getting breadth coverage to validate the product in real-world scenarios...Read more at our Forum

Windows 7 reaches Build 7105 Ultimate x86 32bit Milestone - Fake again?? PDF Print E-mail

Windows 7 build 7105, RC-Escrow release?  According to a new blog from Russian website Wzor, Microsoft’s Windows 7 team has reached a new development milestone and the latest Windows 7 build has jumped to 7105.  The new build was compiled on April 4th with the string 6.1.7105.0.winmain.090404-1235. Overall, the change log lists improved networking support, added support for some previously incompatible programs, added support for new drivers for various devices, extended support for sensory based displays, extras in the LP, small interface improvements, and small optimizations and changes in the kernel.  As it stands, Microsoft plans to release the Windows 7 RC-Escrow build sometime this month, so it is possible that there may be a leak within this week. On the other hand, the official public Release Candidate build is scheduled for May next month, while the Release to Manufacturing is scheduled for September in five months.  Just recently, Microsoft told its partners that Windows 7 RTM was delayed to September because developers and partners are currently unsatisfied with the builds. No specific reasons were mentioned other than the fact that there were still a few bugs. More at our Forum

Zune platform update to be international PDF Print E-mail

More talk of next-generation Zunes and an international rollout of the Zune platform has made its way to the front lines via different sources.  Last week, two job postings pointed to Microsoft's upcoming plans for the Zune platform. The company is readying a hardware refresh for the Zune devices, and has plans for improving the services centered around the Zune. The whispers suggest that with this release, Microsoft will finally aim to expand the Zune into more countries than just the US and Canada. Starting with a tweet from Zune employee from Brian Seitz (see above), reports this week lead observers to believe that the Zune will be updated this year. The release this fall will indeed be an international one, though it's not yet clear what products or countries such a launch will first include. There are talks of expansion to Europe, as well as China and Australia, but a complete list is not yet available. According to Neowin, the form factor will be changing: "Stay tuned for more, including specs and pictures (we've seen the internal video!). I'll leave our readers with this: It's slim and you won't need a D-Pad." Touch-enabled Zune, anyone? All we have is rumors for now: no specs have actually been confirmed for the next-generation Zunes....... More

Windows 7 Up to Build 7079 PDF Print E-mail

With Windows 7 evolving toward the Release Candidate milestone, Microsoft remains mute on the platform's post-Beta development process, making no attempt to clarify the chatter around the progress done with the pre-RC builds of the operating system. Information leaked in the wild now indicates that Windows 7 is up to Build 7079. At the same time, there is also talk of Windows 7 Build 7105 having already been compiled over in Redmond. The software giant offered absolutely no confirmation related to Windows 7 releases from the RC branch following the availability of Beta Build 7000 on January 10, 2009. Windows 7 Build 7079 has 6.1.7079.0.090407-1902 as the complete build string according to Wzor. The version number reveals that the code for the milestone was wrapped up on April 7, 2009, just a couple of day ago, and only a few days after Windows 7 Build 7077, which has already been leaked in the wild and made available for download via torrent trackers...Read more at our Forum

Poll reveals user love for Windows 7 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Wayne

Beta testers of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 7 are four times more
likely to be happy with what they're seeing than were early users
of Windows Vista, a factor that's driving more than half the companies
surveyed to dump Vista adoption plans, a market research company said.
In a poll of corporate IT professionals conducted by ChangeWave Research,
44% of the 68 users testing Windows 7 said that they were "very satisfied"
with the beta.  A similar survey by ChangeWave in February 2007 -- just
weeks after Vista's launch -- found just 10% of the respondents expressing
the same level of satisfaction.  The ChangeWave researchers who conducted
the poll, Andy Golub and Mike Wrobel, said that those who are happy with
Windows 7 cited the new operating system's improved performance as a big
reason for their reaction. "Takes less memory and boots faster, and reminds
me of a new XP," one IT professional told the researchers...Read more at our Forum

Windows 7 Beta to RC transition PDF Print E-mail

Every one of us is waiting for the upcoming Windows 7 RC release. In the meantime, Windows 7 Team has blogged on the upgrade experience from pre-RC builds to RC build, even when the RC dates are not officially out. This blog post indeed shows the openness of the Windows 7 Team to discuss various issues regarding Windows 7 RC. If you are expecting any major announcement, then this post does not have any!  The blog post talks a little about upgrading Windows Vista to Windows 7, but as we discussed earlier there is no upgrade path available from Windows XP to Windows 7  "There's no change here to the plan as has been discussed on many forums. We realized at the start of this project that the "upgrade" from XP would not be an experience we think would yield the best results. There are simply too many changes in how PCs have been configured (applets, hardware support, driver model, etc.) that having all of that support carry forth to Windows 7 would not be nearly as high quality as a clean install"  Microsoft recommends users to do a clean install rather than upgrading from Windows 7 Beta (or any other builds) to Windows 7 RC build. It is not possible to upgrade your Windows 7 Beta to RC unless you bypass the check for the pre-release upgrade....more at our Forum

Windows 7 And Server 2008 R2 To Launch Simultaneously? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Wayne

Microsoft has dropped a hint that Windows Server 2008 R2 will be shipped alongside Windows 7 operating system sometime around the end of this year. In an interview with the CNet.com, Bill Laing, Microsoft’s vice president for its Windows Server division, notified that the server is all set to be shipped by the end of the year, but declined to cite an exact date of the launch. However, Laing asserted that the Release Candidate (RC) for Windows Server 2008 R2 was "not far away" pointing that it could be released alongside RC of Windows 7, which is expected to be released very soon. Along the same line, Laing said in a statement, "It's not far away, but we don't have a final date yet". Incidentally, Microsoft UK last week claimed that the software firm was actually planning to make a couple of big announcements surrounding the Windows 7 launch, and it is broadly believed that Windows Sever 2008 will most likely to be included in those...Read More at our Forum
