Microsoft Corp CEO Steve Ballmer gave the word to financial analysts that a timetable for Windows Mobile 7 has already been set for early 2010. The news of the timetable comes about a week later when Ballmer presented Windows Mobile 6.5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Ballmer, in his unpredictable manner, gave financial analysts the information during a forecast meeting in New York. Ballmer told the analysts about the timetable and when the new mobile software will launch. While this may surprise most, the company already stated in previous announcements that a newer version would ship with Windows 7. Windows Mobile 7 might debut with Microsoft's new operating system for computers...Read more on Our Forum

My expertise as a Computer Architect lies in the Security aspect of the system. Having suffered a devastating loss many years ago led me back to school to study the ins and outs of securing a computer. We all know this cannot be achieved 100%, but the more secure and hardened we make our systems, the harder it is for the bad guys to get in. When we get a new computer, new hardware, operating system, or software we want to get it assembled, installed, and connected as fast as possible so we can play with our new toy. All of this excitement can and often times does cloud our thinking and we forget to make our computer Healthy and Safe. The steps listed below will help assure we have a Healthy, Safe, and Fun computing experience...Read more on Our Forum

Windows 7 RC/RTM Builds – Clearing the Confusion PDF Print E-mail
Written by Riso

Some people say that 7105 and 7106 of Windows 7 are RC builds and the RC will be > 7100.  Basically, after build 7076 the tree was split.  7077 was compiled as an RC ESCROW build (winmain_win7rc) and the winmain lab bumped its build number up to 7105.  7077 and on are code frozen, meaning no feature changes will occur in that branch (the RC branch.  This allows them to work out the bugs to deliver a high quality RC release.  Any code changes internally are checked into winmain (7105 and higher at this point).  So from that standpoint you could say that codewise future 71xx.winmain builds are newer than the RC will be as those builds are still receiving new check-ins from the various fbl labs. So for those who are wondering I will answer the question.  7105 or higher are NOT RC builds, but rather winmain builds pushing towards RTM.  7077, 7078, 7079, 7080 etc… are all RC ESCROW builds.  When the RC has passed testing, they will compile the final RC build as 7100

Microsoft Removes Release Candidate Information PDF Print E-mail

Download links for the Windows 7 Release Candidate where showing up on Microsoft’s Partner Program website yesterday evening for a short time stating that the the new build was released and that it would be available publicly on May 5. This information has now been removed - once again - from the website which is now displaying Windows 7 Beta information. It is very likely that this is the second blunder in short time by Microsoft staff (read: Technet publishes Windows 7 RC Information). This does not necessarily mean that the information that had been published was incorrect. A thread on Neowin mentions that only Microsoft OEM partners such as Dell or Siemens are allowed access to the release candidate at this point in time...Read more on our Forum

Microsoft Gambles on Windows 7 'Starter' PDF Print E-mail

Microsoft Corp. is taking an unusual approach with its new Windows 7 operating system: Customers buying many of the least-expensive laptops with the software are likely to be limited to running three applications at a time and miss out on other key features, or pay for an upgrade. The strategy is one of the ways the software giant is responding to inexpensive port. computers called netbooks, a bright spot in the gloomy personal-computer business that is causing many companies to modify their business plans. Windows 7 will be scaled down for netbooks. Read more on our Forum

Windows 7, build 7082 screenshots have been posted PDF Print E-mail

As 5th May comes closer, and we all anxiously wait for the Release Candidate of Windows 7, build 7082 screenshots have been posted. The images are from a Chinese language version, so we all know where they came from. From what I could tell from the translated version of the page, this is another build from the RC branch. Not much new to see in this version visually, apart from the rounded taskbar buttons that make it somewhat easier for some people to differentiate between open and closed applications. No signs of any new theme or new icons either.  Today once again screenshots of one of windows 7 build has been surfaced on a popular Chinese forum  Once again these are screenshots of one of Chinese build Windows 7 build 7082.  From screenshots its visible that windows 7 build 7082 is like all other older windows 7 build and nothing new in this build.

SMS messages could be used to hijack a phone PDF Print E-mail
Written by Wayne

Be careful who you give your mobile phone number out to. An attacker with the right toolkits and skill could hijack your phone remotely just by sending SMS messages to it, according to mobile security firm Trust Digital. In what it calls a "Midnight Raid Attack" because it would be most effective when a victim is asleep, an attacker could send a text message to a phone that would automatically start up a Web browser and direct the phone to a malicious Web site, said Dan Dearing, vice president of marketing at Trust Digital. The Web site could then download an executable file on the mobile phone that steals data off the phone, he said. In another type of attack, an attacker could hijack a phone by sending a type of SMS message called a control message over the GSM network to a victim's phone that is using a Wi-Fi network and then use special toolkits to sniff the Wifi traffic looking for the victim's e-mail log-in information...Read more on our Forum

Windows 7 vs HTC Magic Android PDF Print E-mail

May 5th should prove to be an interesting day for tech fans, as it would appear that both the much hyped Windows 7 operating system and the HTC Magic Android mobile phone will be launched to the waiting public. Neowin spotted that a Microsoft Partners web page (now replaced with a bog standard information page) had been published which announced that Windows 7 Release Code would be released to the public on May 5th. OK, so we have sort of been here before with these so-called Microsoft leaks have we not? I prefer to think of them as viral press releases. The last one came at the end of March, and also pointed to a May date for RC. As with this latest one, that page was pulled just as soon as the blogosphere had picked up on it, so as to let the viral marketing take over. Mind you, Microsoft needs all the publicity it can get right now as recent reports suggest that a whopping 84 percent of folk have no intention of upgrading to Windows 7 anytime soon...Read more on our Forum

Microsoft Windows 7 RC partners get it now? Or maybe not PDF Print E-mail
Written by Wayne

The Microsoft Partners website has now revealed that Microsoft is looking to provide its partners with the Windows 7 Release Candidate via MSDN and Technet. The Microsoft Partners  web page reveals that the build is available now.  Although apparently Windows 7 is looking to become available to the mass public sometime around the 5th of May, although this could be subject to change so I would only pencil it into calendars now.  However an update has now said that the page was posted in error and was actually old Windows 7 beta info, so looks like we will be waiting longer than expected.
